Electronic Medical Records System

North Cascade Family Physicians has used an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) since June of 2008. The EMR is a significant advance over the old-style paper chart. For example, it allows electronic prescriptions (which improve accuracy and legibility) and faster lab results. EMRs have gotten national attention in the current health care debate. When we started our EMR, only 4% of clinics nationally had a comparable comprehensive system. We believe being an early adopter will help us provide top-notch care.

You will be asked to update your contact and insurance information. NCFP would also like to take your photograph. As part of your record, photos help reduce name mix ups and identity theft. A legal document such as your driver's license or social security number will also be required. New "Red Flag" rules are being imposed by the Government requiring your physician to verify your identity. We are perceived as a creditor and as such the Government has made it our legal responsibility to make sure you are who you say you are. Copies of the "Red Flag" rules are available at the clinic.

Your old paper chart will remain at NCFP. Current health information including your medications and diagnostic tests has been converted to electronic form. We update the electronic record every time you have a visit, have testing done or have a prescription filled. This information is protected by law and will only be made available to non-medical personnel with your written approval.

Hopefully you've already noticed faster lab results and prescriptions. We are actively working on improving your experience. A big transition like this can have some "bumps in the road." We appreciate your patience as we complete the transition to an EMR.
